World Heritage Koyasan

Koyasan is a sacred place for Japanese Buddhism, founded by Kobo Daishi Kukai at the beginning of the Heian period.

The temples dotted around Mt. Koya are called sub-temples. It is a subsidiary temple built within the mountain, admiring the virtues of Kobo Daishi Kukai, and treating the entirety of Mt. Koya as a great temple (the main temple, Kongobu-ji Temple). Currently, there are 117 temples, of which 51 temples serve as lodgings for pilgrims visiting Mt. Koya.
